| THE OLDEST PIANO STORE IN LOS ANGELES, EST. 1880 |
|
Southern California Music Company has been in continual operation in Los Angeles since 1880. It’s the oldest music store in L.A., second oldest in the State of California, and, according to a national publication, it’s believed to be the 25 th oldest store in the United States. When the store was established the population of the area was about 12,000. We had the 585 th phone installation, advertised in the 1998 phone directory, and at our six story downtown original location, had the first antennae put in to show the new technology of television. At the turn of the last century, early 1900’s, you could purchase the "talking machine" which we now call phonographs, for the princely price of $1.00 down and 50 cents a week with good credit. Records to go with your machine cost $2.75 a dozen. We are listed with the California Historical Association, and despite 128 years, three have only been a handful of owners. Our motto has always been the same. "A quality instrument at an affordable price." Locations may change, people may change, but our goal of providing music to everyone has always remained the same.
